‘A
traditional back-street pub, just off Brighton’s Grand Parade, offering good
real ales and home cooking using locally sourced, seasonal and organic
ingredients. Among the specials are steak and mussel pie; wild boar chilli with
black beans and chocolate; fresh seafood chowder; and sweet potato pie. Lighter
meals include jacket potatoes with a choice of fillings, home-made beef and
vegetarian burgers, and sandwiches, with a roast on Sunday.’
‘With a
good mix of customers and a really bustling, chatty atmosphere, this little
back street corner pub remains on excellent form. The two small low-ceilinged
rooms have brocaded wall benches and stools on the stripped wood floor, lots of
interesting old tins all over the walls, cigarette cards on one beam with
whisky labels on another, beermats, and some old advertisements, photographs
and posters; piped music. Good value enjoyable bar food includes lots of
sandwiches (from £2.75; brie and avocado £3.50; steak in French bread £3.25),
baked potatoes with fillings such as seafood chowder (£5.75), spicy sweet
potato pie (£6.25), steak in ale pie or lamb and spinach curry (£6.50), and
Friday beer-battered fish (£6.50); popular Sunday roasts. Well kept Fullers
London Pride, Gales Butser Bitter, Festival Mild and HSB, and guests like
Adanams Broadside and Fullers ESB on handpump. Good wines (housewines come in
three different glass sizes), 90 malt whiskies, a dozen Irish whiskies and good
coffees; they do a splendid Pimms and staff are helpful and friendly. There are
